What to Expect at Your First Appointment at Columbus Hand Institute

Our Hands Deserve Expert, Fellowship-Trained Care

Welcome to Columbus Hand Institute (CHI)! We’re so glad you’re here. This page is designed to help new and prospective patients feel prepared and confident before their first visit. At CHI, our focus is on restoring function and relieving pain, not just treating symptoms.

Dr. Blake brings a unique dual background as a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and fellowship-trained hand surgeon. His philosophy is built on prevention and wellness, and he’s known for taking extra time to listen carefully because the smallest detail you share often holds the key to an accurate diagnosis.

Thanks to our in-house imaging capabilities and a collaborative staff, we can often evaluate and initiate treatment during your first visit.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

No two patients are alike, and neither are our visits. Each appointment is tailored to your needs and may include:

A Thorough, Personalized Consultation

Dr. Blake and his team take the time to understand your health history, concerns and goals. He’s known for spending extra time with patients to ensure they get the time that they deserve.

Imaging When Needed

We may recommend X-rays or an extremity-specific MRI, which is conveniently located just five yards from our clinic rooms and often available the same day.

Colaborative Care

Dr. Blake works closely with PA Heather and PA Jonathan. While you may see a PA at some visits, you will always see Dr. Blake as part of your overall plan.

Physical Therapy First

Reflecting Dr. Blake’s DPT background, therapy and exercises are prioritized to help you heal without surgery whenever possible.

Personalized Timelines

Because we take a comprehensive approach, some visits may run longer than expected. Please allow flexibility in your schedule to ensure you receive the focused attention you deserve.

What to Bring

To make your visit smoother, please bring:

Insurance and Cost Transparency

We accept most major commercial insurance plans as well as Medicare and TriCare, which is especially important for the Fort Benning military community.

We understand that medical care can be expensive, especially for complex treatment plans. While your exact costs will depend on your insurance coverage and recommended care, our team can help you understand your benefits and financial responsibility before you begin your treatment.
